Architect of Pakistan’s Space Programme & Champion for Inclusive Science

Dr. Tariq Mustafa, a University of London mechanical-engineering graduate, was recruited by Nobel laureate Abdus Salam in 1957 to build Pakistan’s space programme. As head of SUPARCO, he established the Sonmiani Rocket Range and oversaw the 1962 Rehbar-1 launch—making Pakistan the third Asian nation in space.

Landmark Achievements:

  • Built Pakistan’s first rocket launch facility (Sonmiani) and directed Rehbar-1 in 1962.
  • Modernized defense production as Federal Secretary across multiple ministries.
  • Founded Pakistan’s National Paralympic Committee—athletes have won 55+ international medals.
  • Honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (1963) and an honorary DSc from University of Greenwich (2013).
